Well, it wasn’t exactly Magic Weekend but Leigh erased another bad, early season memory in their quest for another crack at Super League next season.

Centurions’ 11th successive Betfred Championship and Challenge Cup win was also notable for preventing a remarkable try scoring record.

Kieron Purtill’s side conceded 20 points against their top four rivals but none from Luke Briscoe in his bid for a new all-time British mark for tries in consecutive matches.

The winger, having touched down in 17 successive games, required just one more to take the achievement outright from Eric Harris.

Instead, Leigh kept the shackles on Briscoe as they came from behind to avenge a 38-30 defeat at the Leigh Sports Village back in March.

They now head to Blackpool for Summer Bash on Saturday aiming to right the wrongs of arguably the most painful loss of them all-at home to leaders Toronto Wolfpack on the opening weekend of the campaign.

And while Wolfpack were elevated to Magic status for their Championship clash with Toulouse, Leigh took the M62 to Featherstone for a Saturday evening counter attraction to the FA Cup final.

Josh Walters’ early try deservedly separated the sides as Rovers looked to put greater distance on the ladder between themselves and Centurions.

Eventually after 16 minutes, Leigh found a way to back into the contest through Jack Owens while Ben Reynolds booted the first of his seven goals.

Then it was Liam Hood’s turn to pick up his own try scoring contribution, returning to the side in place of Daniel Mortimer.

The visitors kept up the pressure and centre Ben Crooks registered try number three before Reynolds booted a penalty to make it 18-4 at the break.

Even after weathering Rovers’ early storm and the task of playing up the Post Office Road slope, Leigh knew they were far from home and dry.

So, it was game on when Matty Wildie touched down after 44 minutes.

Referee Matt Rossleigh then dashed Briscoe’s hopes of scoring for an 18th successive fixture with a forward pass call against Tom Holmes.

Leigh rallied again with Nathan Mason and Crooks going over in the space of three minutes for Reynolds converted scores.

At 30-10, it was Leigh’s game to lose and Rovers did their best to spread unnecessary nerves in visiting fans.

Walters and then Josh Hardcastle touched down in the space of three minutes and Leigh’s 30-10 lead had suddenly become 30-20.

Leigh though are made of sterner stuff than earlier in the year with Harrison Hansen and Reynolds crossing for tries in the final 10 minutes to put the result beyond doubt.

Reynolds goaled both to take his final tally to 18 points.

“We are way behind where we should have been,” said Purtill whose side remain fifth but only two points behind London Broncos, Toulouse and Fev who lie second to fourth.

“That’s our own fault. But if we keep turning in performances like this hopefully by the end of the year, we’ll be where we should be.”
