GOLDEN Boot winner Billy Kee hit 25 goals in League Two to fire Accrington Stanley to promotion and the title, but the striker does not need long to think about which of his strikes is his favourite this season.

The 27-year-old scored both goals in last month’s 2-0 win over Yeovil Town that guaranteed the Reds a place in League Two.

But it was his last minute winner at then leaders Luton Town in March that stands out as his number one, as Stanley took number one spot.

“That’s the moment we realised we were going to go up and that we had a chance of winning it,” said Kee, who scored 26 in all competitions, with a late League Cup winner against Championship neighbours Preston North End completing the set.

“Luton are a very very good side so to beat them in the manner we did in the very last minute was brilliant.”

Stanley went to Kenilworth Road knowing that they would become the new League Two leaders with a win.

Sean McConville broke the deadlock just before half-time to put Stanley on the front foot with a magnificent curled effort into the top corner.

Elliot Lee equalised just after the hour, and despite good chances for John Coleman’s men to restore their lead the game looked to be heading for a 1-1 draw.

But Kee kept going, and clinched it in stoppage time with his 20th league goal.

“It was just that moment in the last minute, celebrating towards our fans it was a real special moment. Probably one of the best of my career,” said the former Burton Albion striker.

“It made us all believe what we could do. If you watch the celebrations, there were people on the bench who ran across.

“That shows the unit we have.”

Stanley never looked back after beating Luton to go top, winning promotion with four games to spare and the title in their penultimate game.

Kee was disappointed to sign off on a losing note, as the champions slipped to a final day 3-0 defeat at Swindon Town, but was delighted to receive the Golden Boot at the end of the game, after scoring two more than nearest challengers Marc McNulty, of Coventry, and Cheltenham Town’s Mohamed Eisa, who both closed the season on 23.

“To lose 3-0 in the last game – we tried to end it on a high – but it was nice to get the Golden Boot,” said Kee.

“I didn’t really think about it all year, but when it’s the end of the season you’re trying hard. I think that’s why I missed so many chances, because I was trying too hard.”

Kee, who missed a penalty on the day Stanley clinched the title with a 1-0 win over Lincoln City, added: “I’d have taken my hat off if either of the other two had scored a hat-trick on the last day.

“They’ve done amazing to score the goals, especially Eisa, who’s at Cheltenham, who haven’t done particularly well this year.

“To have a goalscorer like that in the team must be a relief for them.

“I hope McNulty can continue his run in the play-offs now.”
