UPBEAT Chorley boss Tony Hesketh is still confident his side has what it takes to compete in the Unibond League First Division North as they prepare for a tough trip to Newcastle Blue Star.

The Magpies have won only once so far this season, compared to four wins in six league games for Blue Star, whose promotion push is being spearheaded by ex-Reading and Cardiff City striker Paul Brayson.

“It’s one of the biggest challenges we could face. I think they are a lot of people’s favourites to win the league,” said Hesketh.

However, the Chorley chief believes he has seen signs that things are ready to turn for his side.

Hesketh added: “The test could not be greater and we go there on the back of two or three poor results.

“But our performances are improving. We are creating chances, which we weren’t doing a few games ago and one or two players are regaining form.

“I’m still optimistic that despite our poor start we can push on and challenge for a play-off place later in the season.

"The players are not down-hearted. The mood is good and there is still a belief in the squad that we can do well and recover from a poor start.”

Key midfielder Ashley Parillon is rated 50/50 for the trip to the North-East after picking up a knock in Tuesday night’s home defeat to Woodley Sports.
