CHORLEY go into their centenary season – and skipper Andy Holdsworth is aiming for a year to remember.

The Windsor Park outfit were third last year and with new professional all-rounder JJ Smuts is expected to spearhead a charge towards glory.

Holdsworth takes over as captain from Jack Catterall and he said: “There is a good buzz around the club and we can’t wait to start.

“Our hopes are to improve on third. I feel we have a good chance of that.

“We are confident of challenging for the title, although we will be missing lots of players until the beginning of June due to university exams. That’s the downfall of having a good, young team. We also aim to make progress in the cups.”

Chorley have lost batsman and wicket-keeper Josh Tolley to Woodhouses in the Lancashire County League.

But they have signed James Reynard, a Durham University student who scored 524 runs at an average of 35 for Horwich last year.

Smuts, who is just 21, is tipped for Test honours and will pit his wits against Blackpool tomorrow in one of the matches of the day.
