Orpington sprinter star Dina Asher-Smith admitted she was “over the moon” after winning a gold medal at the European Championships on Thursday.

The British record holder, who runs for Blackheath and Bromley Harriers, claimed a season’s best time of 22.37 seconds to win the 200m event in Amsterdam.

Asher-Smith, who became the first British woman to win the 200m at the European Championships, insisted improvement was still possible before the Olympic Games in Rio, which start in August.

The 20-year-old told BBC Sport: “I'm absolutely over the moon – to have my first senior title, I’m just really happy.

“I've still got bits to work on, I got a bit tired in the last 30m but I managed to hold on and win in a good time.

“You always want to run your best times in the championships so this was great. Hopefully it bodes well for the London Anniversary Games and then onto the Olympics in August.”

Asher-Smith said she would take a “big smile” and a great deal of confidence from the victory.

“I’ll take a lot of confidence from this,” she added. “But nothing really changes for me.

“I just want to go out there and run the fastest times when it really matters at the Olympic Games. My goals stay exactly the same for the summer.”
