CHRIS McCann has backed team-mate Kieran Trippier to be the star of Burnley’s season.

The right back missed the Clarets’ FA Cup third round game at Norwich City through suspension, and his absence was keenly felt as they suffered a 4-1 defeat at Carrow Road.

But Trippier will be back as Championship action resumes for Burnley at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Captain McCann believes the England Under 21 international’s return will be key to putting the Clarets back on the right path.

A run of three wins on the spin came to an end after Trippier was sent off for two bookable offences in their first game of 2012 at Leeds United.

It marked a bittersweet day for the defender as it was announced his loan deal from Manchester City had been made permanent, with a three-and-a-half year contract.

But McCann is confident there is more to come from the 21-year-old as he looks to a future at Turf Moor.

“His performances have been brilliant since he came in. Hopefully he can keep that up and who knows where it could take us,” said McCann.

“He’s a fantastic player. I think everyone’s seen his qualities since he came in. He’s been a real shining light for us.

“It’s like he’s been with us for a long, long time.”

Trippier was brought in during the summer, initially on loan from Manchester City, following the sale of Tyrone Mears to Bolton Wanderers.

The former West Ham and Derby right back was expected to be a tough act to follow.

But in just five months with the Clarets, Trippier has scored the same number of goals as Mears did in two seasons, and is already more than halfway to matching his assists for last season in the Championship.

“His work down the right with Ross has been unbelievable,” said McCann.

“He’s great on the ball. He’s got some engine on him to get up and down there.

“I don’t think we’re an easy side to play against having him and Ross running at you. If he can keep putting in those kind of performances he’ll be unbelievable for us.”

Of Trippier’s Elland Road red card, McCann added: “I thought it was a bit harsh on him, but luckily we have him back for the next league game, which is important for us. Hopefully we can get a win under our belt there.”
