VOLUNTEERS have been praised for making sure an annual football tournament was a big success.

More than 100 players took part in the Inter Masjid Tournament – run by youngsters from mosques in the Ribble Valley.

The event was organised through Rossendale Leisure Trust in conjunction with Head Start and Rossendale Young Volunteers Forum.

Head Start chairman, Khizer Rahman said: “The real success was to see young people taking time out to show their passion for football and play in the tournament.

“It was good to see young people who have worked hard to plan and deliver such a great day.”

The tournament, held at Haslingden Leisure Centre, was won by Masjid Bilaal who beat Baitul Mukaram Masjid 10-9 in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

Katie Miller, Rossendale club developement officer said: “It was good to see young volunteers running a festival of football.

“We have worked hard to mentor these young volunteers and provide them with the skills and confidence to give something back to the community.”
