BURNLEY boss Brian Laws plans to hold back some of his summer budget to capitalise on new Premier League rules with September loan signings – but he hopes to find out whether Jack Cork will return to the club before then.

Laws has already brought in Dean Marney, Chris Iwelumo, Ross Wallace and Lee Grant this summer but is now likely to wait for loan opportunities before moving back into the market.

Under new regulations introduced for this season, Premier League teams must each name a 25-man squad on September 1 and any players over the age of 21 who are not included will be unable to play for their parent clubs in league matches until the transfer window reopens on January 1.

Laws expects that will leave a number of talented players looking for loan moves to play regular football and believes some of his remaining budget could be best spent on temporary deals once the transfer window shuts.

“We've got a few options and we're just keeping our powder dry at the moment,” said the Clarets chief.

“We've still got funds available but we are looking at options.

"We're not doing anything immediately.

“With Premier League clubs having to name 25-man squads now there are going to be a lot of players who are going to have to go out on loan or they are not going to play.

“That is going to be a real benefit for all Football League clubs, so we're just holding some of our budget back.”

One Premier League player who Burnley still hope to sign before the closure of the transfer window is Cork, who impressed on loan at Turf Moor during the second half of last season.

The 21-year-old midfielder has been linked this week with a season-long loan move to fellow Championship club Swansea, where Cork’s former Chelsea youth team coach Brendan Rodgers is now manager.

Swansea, once managed by Jack’s father Alan, want to tie up a deal before the season starts on August 7 but Laws is still keen to bring the player back to Burnley.

Cork was said to be open to a Turf Moor return - either on loan or permanently - but may be swayed if he gets the chance to play in the top flight.

“We've had dialogue with Chelsea and Jack Cork's agent, so our finger is very much on the pulse with that,” he said.

“We would love to have him back here but Jack is just weighing things up at the moment because obviously he wants to play in the Premier League, which is understandable.

“But I would expect to hear an answer on that one before the transfer window shuts.”
