NELSON Golf Club are hopeful of boosting their junior membership after being awarded the coveted GolfMark status.

The King’s Causeway club have become only the third in East Lancashire to boast the accreditation, following in the footsteps of Accrington and Rossendale, while Wilpshire are working towards it.

Led by the commitment of Tony Drake, junior organiser at Nelson for the last 28 years, they have been recognised by the English Golf Union for their hard work in ensuring junior golfers and beginners have a safe and enjoyable environment in which to learn the sport.

GolfMark is a national scheme that identifies and recognises junior and beginner-friendly golf facilities, with clubs being assessed on three key areas – coaching and playing, club environment and child protection and duty of care.

Nelson’s business manager Richard Lees said the club’s junior section is in ‘excellent shape’.

He thanked trio Drake, assistant junior organiser Cheryl King and assistant professional Sam Punchard for their tireless efforts working with the club’s junior members.

Meanwhile, Rossendale are celebrating after being awarded GolfMark (high achiever) status.

Rossendale captain Mike Birtwistle said “We have every reason to be proud of this award.”
