CLARKE Carlisle does not believe Burnley need to be too busy in the transfer market this summer, because the current crop is good enough to fashion an immediate Premier League return.

However, with Wolves said to be chasing record signing Steven Fletcher and Hearts’ continued links with Steven Thompson and Robbie Blake, who have both yet to commit to new deals at Turf Moor, the defender has stressed the importance of keeping the nucleus of the squad together.

“I think we have not got just a nucleus, we have got an excellent squad for the Championship and we should be challenging, even before any additions,” said Carlisle, who signed a new two-year deal before the end of the season.

“We have a squad with a massive amount of experience and some young players who will have gained a lot of experience from last season.

“We have got a lot of depth and I think we have got a fantastic chance.”

The 30-year-old, who missed the last two months of the season through a combination of two separate injuries and the form of January signing Leon Cort, added: “The end of the season was a disappointment but that’s gone already.

“We have got a Championship season to focus on and I am looking forward to making a challenge.

“Financially, the club is in a fantastic position to make improvements around the stadium, the training ground and to the squad.

“That is one of the benefits of last season. The chairman has been very frugal and so from a business point of view we are in a strong position.

“From a squad point of view we are also in a very strong position so we have to amalgamate the two to make sure we get a winning formula.”
