MARK Bolton believes the Lancashire Cup should be given greater importance in the cricket calendar – and insists his East Lancashire side will do all they can to make a winning start at Heyside tomorrow.

Bolton leads his men into the first round tie at the Royton club eager to progress in the tournament, which pits the best of the best from leagues across the north west.

“To me the tournement is very important,” said Bolton. “And it is a shame that we are playing this game as a pre-season match because of the scheduling.

“You want to play against the best and the best way of doing that is to play this competition because you do pit yourself against teams you never normally play against.”

Bolton, right, is expecting a tough game but is confident and added: “I don’t know too much about them to be honest – but I have played against Saddlesworth League teams when I was at Clitheroe and they certainly make a game of it.

“But we have a pretty strong team out and are looking to win, even though it is our first hit of the season after last weekend’s friendly was called off.”
