BURNLEY Tennis Club ‘B’ have been crowned East Lancashire Indoor League Division Two champions.
They clinched the title in the penultimate game of the season after beating Crosshill ‘A’ at the Blackburn Northern indoor tennis dome.
With only one team guaranteed promotion and a place in Division One, Burnley needed two points to clinch the title with Ribchester, sitting in second place, and Burnley ‘C’ in third, ready to pounce.
Steve Palmer and Chris Rowell got Burnley off to the perfect start with a 13-1 in the men’s doubles. The ladies doubles was a lot closer but Alison Padgett and Judith Denson took the deciding game to give Burnley a 2-0 lead before the second set of mixed matches.
And the pairings of Palmer and Padgett and Rowell and Denson proved to be too strong for Crosshill as Burnley clinched a 5-0 victory to win the title in style.
Burnley ‘B’ join the ‘A’ team in Division One while the ‘C’ team can clinch runners-up spot in Division Two if they beat Ribchester this week.
