WADE Elliott believes Burnley can go to Sunderland with confidence after capping the Clarets’ first ever Premier League away win in style.

The winger curled in a cracking free kick deep into the stoppage time to round off a 4-1 win at Hull City and told fans: “That was for you!”

Brian Laws’ men had come in for heavy criticism after a 6-1 thumping by Manchester City the previous weekend, and suffered the ignominy of hundreds of supporters heading for the Turf Moor exits as they trailed 3-0 after just seven minutes.

But Elliott and co made up for it against relegation rivals Hull on Saturday and put themselves back in the hunt for survival with four games to go.

“The lads and everyone are made up and it’s terrific for the fans who have followed us all over the place and not seen us get a result,” said the 31-year-old.

“We have maybe been written off a little bit but I think that puts us right back in there.

“I think a lot of people assumed we were gone and maybe if we hadn’t won (at Hull) it would have been very difficult for us to claw our way out of it.

“We are not getting carried away. We still know we’ve got a real challenge ahead of us but I think that puts us back in the game a little bit.

“We will be confident going to Sunderland and I think if we show the same tenacity and spirit again we will have a right go.

“I think that’s the minimum expectation and probably for the fans as well. We are not ready to lay down just yet.”
