CLITHEROE manager Pete Smith has backed his Blues to deliver a county shock tonight and win their first major cup final in 25 years.

The Shawbridge club are hoping to secure their third Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy when they face Southport at Bolton’s Reebok Stadium.

It is the biggest cup match for Clitheroe since 1996, when they reached the final of the FA Vase at the old Wembley Stadium.

Just twice have they secured the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy in their history, the earliest going as far back as 1893 and their latest triumph in 1985.

Smith admits it would take a huge effort for the UniBond Division One (North) club to clinch a third success against a Southport side riding high at the top of Blue Square North – two divisions and 49 places ahead of the Blues in the non-league pyramid.

But after dumping out higher-graded opposition such as Fleetwood Town and Marine, the Blues boss is confident Clitheroe can cause an upset.

“Our task couldn’t be any harder. Southport have enjoyed a great season and they’ve got a lot of quality players,” said Smith.

“They will take some beating and we must fire on all cylinders to stand a chance.

“But I’m confident in my lads. We’ve got a lot of good qualites - such as pace and strength - and we’ll look to use that.”

Clitheroe have confirmed that over 60 hospitality packages have been bought by Blues supporters for tonight’s Reebok clash, with several hundred more fans expected in the main stand.

Supporters can still pay at the gate tonight, with tickets priced at £8 adults and £4 concessions. Kick-off is at 7.45pm.
