BACUP Borough boss Brent Peters has secured victory in his war of words with the FA over an extension to the Vodkat Premier League season.

Peters last week wrote a four-page letter to the FA urging them to prolong the campaign, with his Bacup side facing 14 games in 28 days after a host of postponements this season.

He was told in a reply that ‘the Football Association, while getting the blame for most things, cannot be held responsible for snow in Bacup’, but it has been now agreed to extend the season for a further seven days to May 15.

The FA had already moved the end of the season back a week to May 8, but Peters had threatened to withdraw his side from the league if there was not a further extension.

“Unbeknown to me when I wrote to the FA, the North West Counties League management committee were discussing our situation,” said Peters yesterday. “But the FA still had to sanction it and possibly my letter sent shockwaves through the corridors of Wembley.

“It’s still not a good situation because we’ve still got 13 games left to play but we have moved our home game against Colne from Thursday to May 11.

“The North West Counties League weren’t rattling cages so we had to go to the FA to get noticed.”

Ten of Bacup’s remaining games are at home and Peters said: “The cynics may say we are getting games called off because of the pitch, but on Saturday it was in a better condition than most teams in our league. We are the highest ground in East Lancashire and even last Tuesday snow fell.

“We are getting a third generation (artificial) pitch here, we’re just waiting for the lease to be drawn up.”
