EARBY Cricket Club have managed to avoid early season teething troubles, despite the dawn of a new era.

Not only has the club welcomed new professional Ali Azmat, it is also Andrew Jaggers inaugural season as captain.

And it's a case of so far, so good for the duo as they aim to help steer Earby through a strong season in the Veka Ribblesdale League.

Azmat has been in impressive form since arriving at Applegarth, most notably last weekend when his 116 in the win over Baxenden on Saturday was followed up with 138 in just 89 deliveries in Sunday's win over Barnoldswick.

"He's had four centuries in six games and he's bowling well too," said a delighted Jaggers, who is eager to see what his side are capable of when three of their experienced amateurs return from injury.

Bowler Peter Baistow missed last weekend's games with an ankle problem, wicketkeeper David Watson is close to making a comeback after a knee injury, while batsman Stephen Pickles has also been struggling with knee problems.

"We've had a few good young lads playing in their absence, but I think they might just need a few more games in the seconds to give them that bit more experience," Jaggers said.

"It's quite a good league with some good players this year, and I think we've missed the three who have been injured."

However, Watson may have a battle on his hands to reclaim the wicketkeeper's gloves.

"Chris Walton has been playing there and he's worked well with the professional with him being a spin bowler," Jaggers added.

"They've formed a formidable partnership. But Chris is good in the field as well so I'm sure we'll work something out."

He added: "I'm not sure what we're capable of this season.

"We had a bit of bad luck to get knocked out of the cup the other week. But in the league we should get into the top four and hopefully stay up there."
