ACCRINGTON Stanley manager John Coleman has made his first signing of the summer by snapping up former Fulham midfielder Sean Doherty.

The 21-year-old started as a trainee with the Cottagers, where he had a brief spell at Blackpool.

The former England under-19 international spent the first half of last season at Dutch side Den Haag before moving to Port Vale at the start of 2006.

Speaking about his first signing, Coleman said: "Sean is a very promising player, I have been keeping an eye on him for a while now and he is looking forward to starting the season with us this year.

"To be honest I don't know if we'd have been able to bring him here if we were in the Conference so it's good to see the benefits of being in the Football League are already starting to have an effect."
