DAVID Edgar hopes his Old Trafford performance will spark a run in the side, after enduring a frustrating first six months in his Turf Moor career.

The former Newcastle United defender signed a four-year deal with Burnley in July, but had to wait until Saturday's game against Manchester United before making his Premier League debut for the Clarets.

Injuries to central defenders Steven Caldwell and Clarke Carlisle, and Cameroon international Andre Bikey’s absence due to the African Cup of Nations, created an opening for the young Canadian.

Now he hopes it's his turn to keep a team-mate on the sidelines.

“Being patient has been the story of my career so far, first at Newcastle, and then I thought I’d come here and play, but things happen,” said Edgar.

“I was suspended for the first game and the gaffer said that was a big reason because the lads played well, and there's nothing you can do when people ahead of you are playing well and staying in the team.

"It was all about just keeping quiet and getting my head down in training and playing in the reserve games.

"It's been frustrating but the guys who were playing in my position were doing well at the beginning of the season and throughout the season at home.

"I never once thought I'd made the wrong move.

"I love it here, I love the lads, I love the coaching staff, and the new staff that's come in. It's a learning curve because it's the only time I've left Newcastle.

"I just kept patient and got my chance (on Saturday) and hopefully I've done enough to stay in the team.

"I love the guys that are in my position but I want to try to keep the jersey.

"I know it's been through injuries but I've had a chance to stake my claim and hopefully I've done enough.

"I like to think I did alright against world class players.

"It was never a 3-0 game. Even their staff said so."
