BLACKBURN Rovers are set to open contract talks with midfielders Steven Reid and David Dunn in the next few weeks.

The duo both have just one year remaining on their current deals but suffered badly from injuries last season.

Republic of Ireland international Reid, 28, made four appearances at the start of the campaign before persistent knee problems forced him to go under the knife, ruling him out for the rest of the season.

Dunn, who is in his second spell with the club and had already publicly expressed his desire to start contract negotiations this summer, featured 17 times during a stop-start season.

Despite surgery on his Achilles in August, he was unable to shake off the injury on his return and it was decided that the 29-year-old would undergo a second operation in early May.

But boss Sam Allardyce is hopeful that both will be available for the start of the 2009/10 season, although Reid is still touch and go to be ready in time.

And the duo remain two of Rovers’ key players when fit, so the club are expected to enter into talks about contract extensions.

Rovers had already confirmed that they are due to start negotiations in the near future with Morten Gamst Pedersen, whose deal also expires next summer.

“David and Steven have both got a year left, so we’ll sit down and have a chat with them,” said Rovers chairman John Williams.

“We’ve got David, Steven and Morten in that position.”
