ROBBIE Blake hopes to celebrate his 200th league game for Burnley with three points this afternoon – and he believes the Clarets should target remaining unbeaten for the final 12 matches of the Championship campaign.

Blake will become the only member of the current Clarets squad to have played 200 league games for the club if he appears in this afternoon’s home game against Sheffield Wednesday.

It is a milestone that spans two separate spells with the club.

Blake, who turns 33 on Wednesday, has played some part in every Championship match this season, having scored 14 goals in 79 league games since his return to Turf Moor 18 months ago.

The striker is understandly proud to reach the 200 mark but will only be able to celebrate if Burnley beat Sheffield Wednesday today.

And he believes the eighth-placed Clarets should aim to avoid a single defeat in the run-in if they are to make the play-offs.

“I’m delighted to reach 200,” said Blake, who had two-and-a-half years away from Turf Moor at Birmingham and Leeds.

“I found out earlier on in the week and hopefully I can top it off with a performance and three points to make it a fantastic weekend for me.

“It’s fantastic that I’ve got in the team and managed to stay in it so far. Obviously every player in the season wants to be a big part of any team that’s doing well.

“I’ve done that and I’ve just got to keep on my toes and obviously no slacking off, because everyone knows they can’t slacken off because you won’t play.

“I’m really enjoying the season, it’s certainly been an enjoyable one and one we’ll never forget.

“The club’s fantastic, the players are fantastic, the staff are great so you come into an environment that is very enjoyable. In any walk of life it will bring the best out of you if you’re enjoying yourself at work.

“There’s big games coming up but as a player you want to be involved in those games.

“No disrespect but there are winnable games for us, so we’ve got to treat it as a big game and hopefully come out on top and get the three points.

“Hopefully we might win this one today and then go on until the end of the season unbeaten and finish in the top six.

“After this epic season we’ve had, it’s all teed up for us now. We’ve put ourselves in a great position and hopefully we can have a happy ending.”

Blake might not have made it to 200 after indicating earlier in the season that he may opt to leave if a two-month spell out of the team had continued.

But he regained his place after coming off the bench to score against Coventry and Reading, with Owen Coyle paying tribute to his player’s contribution over the season.

Asked whether he felt Blake was in some of the best form of his career, Coyle said: “I’ve got no doubt about that.

“I’m absolutely delighted if that’s the landmark he’s reached and he’s very deserving of it.

“I’m pretty sure he’ll reward everybody with another terrific performance because he’s been of great form of late and that’s what we need.

“Even when he was on the bench, it didn’t mean he was a bad player. Chris Eagles, Martin Paterson, they’ve all been on the bench because that’s what happens with forward players.

“There are no two forwards, or very rarely, who are going to play each and every game of the season.

“What is important is that they retain their belief in their own ability and the belief we have in them as staff.

“There will be times, and there might be times between now and the end of the season, when different players in the middle and strike department might be on the bench for a couple of games.

“Robbie’s just a top lad, aside from his football ability.

"He knows what my feelings are of him as a person, what he brings to the team and what he brings to the group in terms of his spirit.”
