THE last major north-west forest rally of the year takes place on Saturday with the ever-popular Grizedale Stages.

Based in Coniston and centred around the Grizedale Forest, the attraction for all competitors is the quality of the gravel roads.

“The format remains the same with two long stages in Grizedale followed by the ever-popular blast through Dunnerdale - twice - and then a return to Grizedale with service halts in between each pair of stages,” explained rally press offficer Roger Harrison.

“For just £5, spectators can park you car in one of the recognised official car parks. This £5 will allow one car including occupants to park up and receive a Grizedale Stages programme. The revenue is split between the event, Forestry Commission and the Mountain Rescue Team who provide manpower for the car parks."

Former British champion Mark Higgins leads the field away at 9am on Saturday from Coniston main car park, with the last car due back around 3.30pm.

Fresh from his third in class on last month’s Bulldog Rally, Blackburn’s Matt Griffin is also competing - free of charge!

Griffin, who has been contesting the F1000 Forest Rally Championship in a Nissan Micra, won a free entry through a raffle organised by the F1000 team.
