Colne travelled to the oldest football club in the world – and they could not have hoped for a better start in this first qualifying round of the FA Cup.

After just five minutes, Stevie Hall released Ted Cockett down the right but just as Liam Garbutt was about to strike his cross he was unceremoniously bundled to the ground by Greg Wright. The resulting penalty was confidently converted by Martin Broderick.

But just a minute later Sheffield were back on level terms when Darryl Winter rose unchallenged at the far post to head home Matt Roney’s free kick.

On 20 minutes, Sheffield took the lead when former Bradford City player Scott Partridge profited from bad defending and deflected a poor clearance to the feet of Michael Goddard who calmly slotted home.

Five minutes later, Sheffield increased their lead when Roney’s cross from the right was headed confidently home by Partridge who found himself unmarked at the back post.

In the second half, chances fell to both teams but Colne can consider themselves unlucky not to earn themselves at least a draw.

On 55 minutes, James Crorken brought out a brilliant save from Leigh Walker from a well struck free kick after Garbutt had been brought down on the edge of the area.

With five minutes left, Colne were rewarded for their pressure when Cockett headed home the rebound from Adam Whiteoak’s shot.

But it was a case of too little too late.
