BACUP manager Brent Peters hailed his FA Cup heroes after they produced one of the shocks of the round.

Borough produced a great display at West View to beat UniBond Premier Division outfit Cammell Laird 3-0 in the first qualifying round of the competition.

All of the goals came in the second-half, with Tommy Turner netting a brace and Martin Cosgrave scoring.

Bacup netted £3,000 prize money for their exploits, and Peters was full of praise for his players.

“I said prior to the game that my lads would not be fazed by the opposition,” said the Bacup boss.

“People shouldn’t be surprised if we progress through to the next round, such is the confidence I have in this squad of players.

“This was a top team effort. Up to now this season, these lads have been an absolute pleasure to work with and manage.

“On Saturday, they were a credit to themselves and, equally, they were a credit to myself and Bacup Borough.

“This result and performance over the 90 minutes was fully deserved.”

Bacup opened the scoring on 67 minutes. A long kick up field saw former Burnley stalwart Graham Branch misjudge a header and leave his goalkeeper Richard Whiteside in no mans land and Turner took full advantage to send Bacup ahead.

On 72 minutes, Cammell Laird were awarded a penalty, but the spot-kick was sent wide of the right hand post.

More misery was to follow for the visitors as Cosgrave doubled Bacup’s lead.

Warren Collier delivered a cross which sub Cosgrave, on for Dominic Slavin, smashed the ball into the net.

Cammell Laird, desperate to get back into the game, pushed men forward but the Bacup defence were well in command.

And on 88 minutes, the game was over when Cosgrave and Turner both closed down well, forcing an error between keeper and defender which Turner capitalised upon before putting the ball into the empty net.
