WILY winger Wade Elliott has backed Burnley to end their early season goal drought.

After registering 14 different scorers in pre-season, the Clarets haven’t found the net in the Championship since the opening day, when Martin Paterson’s single strike proved to be little more than a consolation as Sheffield Wednesday romped to a 4-1 win.

That result, followed by a 3-0 loss at home to Ipswich, switched the emphasis to clean sheets.

But Elliott, who book-ended the summer friendlies with goals against Carolina RailHawks and Inverness, believes it won’t be long before the ammunition, increased by the transfer deadline day capture of Steven Thompson from Cardiff, starts firing.

“We’ve been resolute, got a couple of clean sheets, and hopefully we can build from that and add the other bits,” he said.

“It’s about trying to find a balance, we realise we’re in it together, and the lads that are more inclined to go forward have a duty to help the lads out at the back, and vice versa.

“We couldn’t keep going the way we were in the first couple of games, and hopefully we’ve righted that – although you don’t want to say that because you’re setting yourself up for a fall – but we’ve been stronger and harder to break down.

“We know we have the capability going forward.

“We’ve added Thommo, which gives us another string to our bow.

“He gives us another dimension. At times teams maybe knew what to expect from us, they came and, especially at home, made it difficult, sitting in.

“Ipswich sat in, we had loads of possession and chances but, whether we got anxious and left gaps, we conceded.

“Hopefully we’ve learned our lesson. We’ll keep probing, keep trying to get a goal, but make sure we don’t leave ourselves open at the back.”

He added: “We’ve got a range of goals, hopefully, now.

"Chris McCann is great at arriving from midfield, Pato will nick them in and around the box, and although we’ve struggled so far for goals, we should be able to score more types of goals than maybe we have done in the past.

“We were never taken in by what happened in pre-season, we knew the season would be a different prospect, and we have to learn the lessons from the first couple of games.

“We just need to add goals now.”
