FOOTBALL treasures from the career of a Burnley FC star are set to go under the hammer.

Former goalkeeper Alan Stevenson originally sold the memorabilia from his 11-year Clarets career eight years ago, for more than £10,000, because they were just "sitting in the loft".

Now a leading sporting auction house is hoping to raise up to £5,000 after the new owner put some of the items up for sale at London's Sotheby's next week.

The mementoes include a Third Division champions' medal from 1982, a silver tray celebrating Stevenson's 300th appearance for the Turf Moor club, and six England Under-23 caps.

Stevenson, 57, who played 550 times for Burnley, was unaware his career treasures were about to be resold, but insists he has no regrets about auctioning them off.

"They were sat in the loft for 20 years. I never took them out and they were just wasting away up there," he said.

"I have got my memories, so I don't need the medals to have a memory."

Stevenson played for Burnley between 1972 and 1983, before joining Manch-ester City, Rotherham and Hartlepool. After retiring from football, he moved into the business side of the game and is now commercial director at Shrewsbury Town.

But he is far from sentimen-tal about the auction, and is not concerned about the items being sold off to the highest bidder. He added: "I am not really worried. I had my fun out of them.

"Winning them was the important thing and you move on. I kept one cap, an England Under-23 one, but if they give other people pleasure, I don't mind.

"A lot of players have sold their stuff and I was not that bothered about mine."

The mementoes, which are being sold by Graham Budd Auctions, will go under the hammer at Sotheby's Olympia, London, next Wednesday.
