CLARET fans are happy to bang the drum for their Turf Moor heroes - they just don't want an official tubthumper in the stands.

Club bosses at Burnley FC have been kicking around a number of ideas to further improve the support for the Championship outfit.

And one idea put forward - in an echo of more continental climes - was the appointment of a club drummer on matchdays.

But a poll on the club's website has given the thumbs down to the proposals - with 770 people opposed to the initiative and only 165 in favour.

Instead the club will set up a singing section in the upper tier of the James Hargreaves Stand.

A Burnley FC spokesman said: "This has clearly been an issue and following a poll on our official website, people have voted in their hundreds."

Some felt so strongly about the proposition that they e-mailed their views on a number of occasions from the same addresses, according to the club.

The spokesman added: "As a listening club, Burnley FC have therefore decided not to introduce a club drummer next season.

"The singing section will be initially situated in the upper tier of the James Hargreaves Stand and we have allocated blocks two and three, at the David Fishwick Stand end, for supporters eager to turn up the volume."

Plans for a flags parade, at the back of the new singing section, featuring designs dreamed up by supporters, are also set to go ahead.

The flags can be up to seven metres long and no higher than 1.8 metres high and the designs must conform to ground regulations.
