Bacup manager Brent Peters was left furious after their match against Newcastle Town ended in controversy.

With the match level at 1-1, thanks to goals from Tony Carroll and Simon Elldershaw, the referee awarded a contentious free-kick to the visitors, who had been reduced to 10-men, on the edge of the area.

The set piece was blasted into the wall and the official adjudged the ball to have hit a Bacup hand, and pointed to the spot for a penalty.

Phil Melville saved the first attempt, but Ben Mills netted the rebound.

Worse was to come for Bacup when Stuart Shepherd was shown a harsh red card for apparent retaliation
