BURNLEY-born striker Jay Rodriguez is set to be offered a new deal, after completing his first year with the Clarets.

The 18-year-old signed professional terms at the end of last season, after impressing then manager Steve Cotterill.

Owen Coyle has continued to monitor Rodriguez since taking charge in November, both in training and on his loan spell with Stirling Albion.

Although the Binos were relegated to the Scottish Second Division following last week's 3-0 defeat to Dundee, Coyle has been pleased with the youngster's individual progress.

"The reason Jay went to Stirling is we knew he would get regular games," the Clarets boss said.

"He missed six weeks with a chest problem, but he has still done well and he looks as if he is improving on a regular basis.

"The two months during the summer are important to him now because I would expect him to come back bigger and stronger and hopefully ready to show that he has a part to play at this football club.

"He is out of contract, but I want to keep Jay Rodriguez.

"I think he has an opportunity and I have already been speaking to his agent and we will look to get that resolved."

Rodriguez, who made his Burnley bow as an 87th-minute substitute against Bristol City in December, has played 10 games for Stirling so far and scored two goals.
