ASA Hartford is set to become Reserve team manager at Accrington Stanley.
It is understood the Scottish legend and former Blackburn Rovers coach will join the Reds after ironing out financial matters with previous club Macclesfield Town, where he was assistant manager alongside Ian Brightwell until they were both dismissed earlier this year.
Harford will also work alongside director of youth Phil Hackney at the club's centre of excellence.
A Stanley spokesman said: "Nothing is sorted as yet. But Asa has come in and done a couple of sessions with the kids and he's had a look at the Reserve team with a view to taking on the role of Reserve team manager."
A Scottish international midfielder, Hartford became famous for failing a medical examination after the discovery of a heart condition which put paid to a high profile transfer to Leeds United in November 1971.
However, subsequent successful stints at Manchester City, Nottingham Forest, Everton, Norwich City and Stockport County made a mockery of Leeds' concerns.
Hartford has enjoyed spells in charge of Bolton and Stockport (player-coach), as well as Shrewsbury, Boston United, Rovers, Stoke and Manchester City (assistant/caretaker manager).
