Rovers goalkeeper Joe Hilton has been handed a new two-year contract.

Hilton, who finished the season on loan at Ross County, has agreed a new contract through to 2023, his second contract extension in a matter of months.

The 21-year-old is the latest player to sign a new deal with the club and is one of a crop of young players to have committed their futures to the club.

He will likely be considered for another loan move again next season, with Rovers having a host of young goalkeepers in competition behind Thomas Kaminski, with Under-18s stopper Aidan Dowling having signed pro terms, adding to Jordan Eastham and Antonis Stergiakis who shared the gloves for the Under-23s last term.

Ewood Park, making 20 appearances for Billy Barr’s side.

An ankle injury saw him sidelined for the first half of last season, before he enjoyed a three-game emergency loan spell at Fleetwood Town in January – making his professional debut against Hull City in the EFL Trophy.

He was then loaned to Ross County where he spent the second half of the season, but didn’t make a senior appearance.

“I’m made up,” Hilton said.

“I’ve loved my time here so far.

“I want to kick on now. Those experiences have given me a little glimpse of what it’s like and I just want to keep pushing on and continue that. I’m still only 21, which is a baby for a goalkeeper, so it’s just about finding that right opportunity and grabbing it with both hands when it comes along.”
