Tony Mowbray said the game played out just as he expected and was delighted to see his side make it back-to-back wins to sign off an unbeaten November.

Rovers saw off the challenge of Barnsley courtesy of goals from Adam Armstrong and Sam Gallagher but weren't at their free-flowing best.

Romal Palmer pulled one back from the visitors, who had 23 shots at goal across the 90 minutes, in the dying seconds to make it a nervy end to the match, but Rovers held out to make it seven points from nine since the international break.

Mowbray has long been an admirer of Barnsley’s style, and predicted a tough game beforehand, but felt his side did enough to secure a valuable three points, aided by Armstrong's 13th of the season on the stroke of half-time.

“It was a stodgy game, every game we can’t go and have 80 per cent possession like we had for spells at Preston,” he said.

“Their front three weren’t going to let us do that, so it was a tough day for us, but we managed to win.

“We’ll put the points in the bag and move on to the next one and the next one will be no easier, Millwall have drawn five of their seven away games this season so they’ll be a tough nut to crack, and we’ll look to keep a winning sequence going.”

Rovers weren’t given the freedom to play as they have at times this season, with Mowbray praising the approach of the visitors for making life difficult.

Thomas Kaminski was forced in to two excellent saves, denied a deserved clean sheet by Palmer's late goal, as a goal from substitute Gallagher, for the second successive week, turned out to be the matchwinner.

“It was a dangerous game,” he added.

“I said at half-time that the game panned out as I thought. Their front three are a pressing machine really, you can’t get past them, unless you boot it up the front and we had Armstrong, Elliott and Brereton, none who you would call dominant aerially, so we found it tough to get past their frontline.

“That meant their wing-backs could jump out and it was tough to get the ball forward.

“Credit to them, they made the game really difficult for us. This is Championship football, you either decide that you’re going to scrap everything for this one and play a different way, or you try and see if you can move the ball quick enough to give them problems.

“It was a tough game, as I expected, they have young, athletic, motivated footballers in their team, but we found a way to win and I think we deserved to win.

“I was disappointed with the goal we conceded at the end. That made the last couple of minutes a bit chaotic.”
