STEWART Downing has returned to Blackburn Rovers.

The experienced midfielder started 38 of Rovers’ 46 league games last season but left at the end of his contract in the summer.

A second stint at Ewood Park has never been ruled out however and the 35-cap England international has put pen to paper on a new deal.

The 36-year-old is available to face former club Middlesbrough on Tuesday night.

Having started his career at the Riverside, the former Liverpool, Aston Villa and West Ham United man has made more than 700 career appearances with the majority of his career spent in the Premier League.

Downing played a variety of different roles for Tony Mowbray last season and was on target against Barnsley and Nottingham Forest.

He will wear the No.6 shirt in his second spell with Rovers.
