Charlie Mulgrew secured a deadline day exit from Rovers having signed for Fleetwood Town on a season-long loan deal.

It is the second loan move in 12 months for Mulgrew who joined Wigan Athletic on deadline day in August 2019, only to cut that short in January to return to Rovers.

However, the 34-year-old has been frozen out of first-team action since, playing just once for Tony Mowbray’s side upon his return.

That came in the 2-0 defeat at Barnsley in June, his 100th start for the club, having signed as a free agent in the summer of 2016 after leaving Celtic.

The Scot has joined Joey Barton’s promotion-chasers until the end of the 2020/21 campaign, having been linked with a move to the Cod Army throughout the window.

The two clubs finally came to an agreement over the deal on deadline day, with Mulgrew joining Fleetwood who have won two of their opening five League One fixtures.

Mulgrew was a key part of the Rovers side which secured promotion from the third tier in 2017/18, scoring 14 times, and he found the net on 10 occasions the following campaign, signing a new deal through to 2021 as reward for his form.

However, since starting the opening day defeat to Charlton in 2018 he has played just once more, and he failed to appear in any of the pre-season friendlies.

Mulgrew leaves having played 109 times in all for the club, scoring 27 goals, and captained them for two full seasons.
