Rovers are braced for a busy deadline day – with three incomings likely before the 5pm cut-off point.

Leeds United left back Barry Douglas and Norwich City midfielder Tom Trybull are expected to sign on season-long loan deals, with Middlesbrough goalkeeper Aynsley Pears a likely permanent addition.

Douglas and Trybull both underwent medicals yesterday, while Tony Mowbray is hopeful of adding another goalkeeper to his ranks in the form of 22-year-old Pears.

Mowbray had hoped the deals would be concluded last night, but Rovers are expected to complete the deals today in a big boost to their squad.

Amari’i Bell is the only recognised left back in the squad, and Douglas would provide an experienced option in that position, with the 31-year-old having won promotion twice from the Championship in the last three years.

German midfielder Trybull, aged 27, was part of the Norwich side that won the Championship title in 2019 and he started 14 times for them in the Premier League last season.

Aynsley Pears looks set to become the third goalkeeping addition of the window as he closes in on a move to Ewood Park.

The Middlesbrough stopper has been on Rovers’ radar throughout the course of the window and the club are confident of securing a permanent deal on deadline day having previously seen a big rejected.

Mowbray has already added a first-choice goalkeeper in Thomas Kaminski from AA Gent, as well as Antonis Stergiakis who arrived from Slavia Sofia when the window for international transfers closed last week.

However, the manager still feels he is a goalkeeper light, with the 22-year-old set to fill that void which would allow Andrew Fisher to go out on loan should Rovers be able to secure him a move before the deadline.

Pears has played 25 times for Boro, including against Rovers in February, but is into the final year of his deal at the Riverside, with Neil Warnock willing to allow him to move to pastures new after brining in Marcus Bettinelli from Fulham.

And with Rovers keen to add another gloveman to their ranks, a permanent deal is expected to be wrapped up well before the deadline.

Rovers are also looking to make moves before the deadline for left back Barry Douglas and midfielder Tom Trybull, on loan from Leeds and Norwich respectively.

Mowbray hasn’t been one to do deals late in the day during his time at the club, but in a unique window felt it was always going to be the case this time around.

He told the Lancashire Telegraph: “I think so, it is generally the way in most windows but I do think the way the foreign market closed nearly two weeks ago, there was always going to be some internal business.

“I do think there will be a lot of business, ins and outs, at football clubs up and down the country and I’m sure we’ll be involved in that.

“Let’s wait and see if that materialises and we can get them building and finalised.”

Goalkeepers were always going to be on the shopping list after Christian Walton’s loan spell ended after the final game of last season, while Jayson Leutwiler joined Fleetwood Town after his contract expired.

A left back was another priority position for Mowbray, with Douglas set to join on a season-long loan, while Trybull will add competition in area of the pitch where Rovers have been light of options.

“We haven’t got any left-sided defenders really, if Amari’i Bell, who has done exceptionally well for us this year, was to pick up a knock then we’d end up like England, playing a right footer on the left. That’s not ideal sometimes,” the manager added.

Kaminski, signed for a fee of around £450,000, will be Rovers’ biggest cash buy of the window, with Daniel Ayala, Tyrhys Dolan and Stergiakis arriving on free transfers, with two loan deals primed and ready to be concluded.

Mowbray has always preferred to add permanent players to his squad where possible, but feels loans are the best way to add depth to a squad which was showing signs of strain as Elliott Bennett this week joined the injury list.

“We’re trying to build this football club, give it a foundation where we can have a stock of valuable assets than can help the team win game after game on a Saturday but also if we get into a situation where we need to sell an asset to maintain things or improve in other areas then we’ve got lots of players that other clubs would like to sign,” he explained.

“We’re not cash rich at this moment, we’re not flush with cash, we’re not going out to buy a £1m footballer, but loans are okay for me because the squad is a bit thin at the moment.

“Without any signings we’d probably have had to register two youth players to fill our bench up.”

Rovers can still add free agents to their squad until the close of play on Tuesday.
