Greg Cunningham made his first league appearance for Cardiff City since January 2019 and could be in line to feature against Rovers this weekend.

Cunningham saw his season-long loan with Rovers cut short in January after just 10 appearances having picked up a cruciate ligament injury at QPR almost 12 months ago.

The Republic of Ireland became a favourite at the club, with supporters and players, and he would likely come under consideration for another loan spell were he made available.

Right now he’s required for the Bluebirds who lost regular left back Joe Bennett to injury.

That meant Cunningham, who hadn’t been on the bench for either of the opening two Championship fixtures, was thrust in for his first league start since New Year’s Day 2019, only for Cardiff to fall to a 2-1 defeat.

The left back played seven times in the 2018/19 Premier League campaign, and did feature in the Carabao Cup defeat at Northampton earlier this month, but appearances have been in short supply since his £3m switch from Preston North End in 2018.

The 29-year-old is into the final year of his deal at the Cardiff City Stadium, but his aim is to stay fit, and feature regularly, after a difficult last couple of seasons.

Cardiff were without key performers Bennett and midfielder Joe Ralls for their defeat to the Royals and will now be assessed ahead of the Ewood trip.

Manager Neil Harris, whose side were beaten 3-2 by Rovers in June and later lost in the play-offs to Fulham, told Wales Online of Bennett: "Back of the knee, top of the calf, bottom of the hamstring, last week at Forest when he went down. We are hoping to have him back in training this week."

Cardiff arrive at Ewood having lost their two home matches, to Sheffield Wednesday and Reading, but did win on the road at Nottingham Forest.
