Tony Mowbray feels rewards have reaped the rewards after months of hard work after their last visit to Derby County.

Rovers backed up a 5-0 win over Wycombe with a 4-0 win at Derby County, the scene of their final Championship match pre-lockdown in March when they were beaten 3-0.

Results haven’t always gone Rovers’ way since returning from lockdown, but Mowbray has seen promising signs on the training ground, and in the matches, with his side having now scored 11 goals in their three Championship fixtures.

They were also unfortunate to lose in the Carabao Cup at Newcastle United, but a lightning fast performance saw them 3-0 up inside 15 minutes at Pride Park.

Rovers added a fourth in the closing stages as Adam Armstrong scored for the eighth time in his last sixth start, to top off a fine afternoon for Mowbray’s men which started off with Bradley Johnson’s double backing up a Tyrhys Dolan tap-in.

“I think we keep doing what we do, I think you’ve seen that in all of the games this year,” he said.

“We should have got more from Bournemouth, how we lost at Newcastle is a mystery, we scored five last weekend, done pretty well here, and the players deserve huge credit for their workrate, effort, energy that they’re putting into the games and getting the rewards that we’ve tried to do in the last six months.

“We’ve tried to change the team around a little bit and the benefits are there for all to see.

“I’m pleased for the defenders, pleased for the goalkeeper who made two saves, and I think we’re happy enough. Armstrong scored again, Brereton needs a goal of course, Dolan scored, the front three are looking a threat, I hope to all teams, and we’re happy enough.”

Rovers managed 23 shots at goal for the second week running and could have had more than the four goals they managed.

Thomas Kaminski made key saves in either half, first denying Louie Sibley and then substitute Morgan Whittaker late on, as Rovers backed up their clean sheet against Wycombe.

Mowbray felt a lack of ruthless edge cost Rovers too often this season, but they’ve been taking a higher percentage of their opportunities this time around, owing to the work on the training ground, according to the manager.

He added: “We had 23 shots, scored four. I think that’s been one of our issues, the percentages. We’ve worked a lot on finishing and the final pass into the box and picking the right pass when we get into the crucial areas because it was letting us down.

“We’ve been able to dominate games but not finish teams off because we’ve not taken our chances.

“You can’t be too greedy but we did have some amazing chances to score one or two more, but that’s fine.

“Fantastic for Bradley Johnson who is growing into this football club now, he looks irreplaceable his form in the last few games.

“Let’s see if we can maintain it but it doesn’t look like it’s slowing down at the minute.”

The one blot on the afternoon was a hamstring injury to Joe Rankin-Costello which forced him off on the hour mark. He will undergo a scan early next week for Rovers to learn the severity of it.
