Willem Tomlinson has left League Two side Mansfield Town by mutual consent.

Tomlinson had the option in his contract taken up by the Stags in the summer, but has now found himself on the hunt for a new club after leaving Field Mill.

The 22-year-old spent time on trial at Accrington Stanley earlier in the summer, playing twice for John Coleman’s men in behind closed doors matches, including against a Rovers XI last week.

He made his debut for Rovers in an FA Cup tie against Manchester United in February 2019, in what proved to be Owen Coyle’s final match in charge, while he played seven times in all during the League One promotion campaign.

Tomlinson left Rovers in early 2019 when he was snapped up by Mansfield where he went on to play 33 times, scoring once.

However, he has found himself down the pecking order at the club and now has the opportunity to find a new club after his departure.

A statement on the club’s website read: “Midfielder Willem Tomlinson has today left Mansfield Town Football Club after the 22-year-old’s contract was terminated by mutual accord.

“Willem made 33 appearances for the club following his signing in February 2019 from Blackburn Rovers.”

Tomlinson had a 10-year association with Rovers before leaving in 2019, having been a fixture in the Academy sides when coming through the ranks, but the emergence of Lewis Travis pushed him down the pecking order at Ewood Park.

He was training with Exeter City prior to joining Mansfield Town as he left Rovers via mutual consent.

Speaking at the time of his release, Tony Mowbray said: “I feel at this moment that he can’t force his way in to our current set-up and the best thing at a certain age is to go and play, whatever the level is you find, just go and play.

“If you’re good enough then you will come back.

“If he starts in League One, or League Two, then he will find himself coveted before too long if he performs at the level he needs to by a Championship club.”
