Rovers captain Elliott Bennett says belief in the dressing room is high that the club are moving in the right direction.

Their faint play-off hopes ended with defeat at Millwall on Tuesday night, their fourth loss since the re-start, as they failed to score for the fourth time in their last five away matches.

Rovers are currently locked on 60 points, the same number they achieved last season after promotion from League One, but will be guaranteed a top half finish if they avoid defeat against Reading at Ewood Park on Saturday.

They have flirted with the top six for much of the season, and although the task is now mathematically impossible ahead of their remaining two matches, Bennett believes they have given it their all.

He said: “We have strong belief in the dressing room for each other, the gaffer, the coaching staff, regarding what we're trying to achieve.

“We work hard every day in training and I don't think anyone can ever say that there's a lack of effort from the lads.

“We're all in it together and over the course of 44 games now we've not been good enough to get into the top six."

Reading are the visitors to Ewood on Saturday before a final day trip to Luton Town who will hope they can take their survival bid into that Kenilworth Road showdown.

It’s been a disappointing period for Rovers since moving seventh in the standings after the win over Bristol City in their first game back.

But the 31-year-old, who returned to the side in place of Ryan Nyambe at the New Den, stressed: “The gaffer and the lads in the dressing room won't allow the season to end poorly.

"We have two games to play and there's pride in the shirt every time you cross the white line.

“We have to give our all in the next two games and see where we can get to."

After Mason Bennett’s 20th minute goal for Millwall on Tuesday, Rovers had two-thirds of the possession, but managed just two shots at goal.

They failed to break through Gary Rowett’s side who boosted their play-off hopes at the same time as ending Rovers’.

And Bennett told the club website: “It didn't happen for us and it's a really disappointing night.

“It showed what we've been lacking this season, conceding a goal and not having that bit of quality to find a route back into the game.

“Millwall have had 15 clean sheets I think this season. They live off scoring a goal and then being hard to break down due to having everyone behind the ball.

“They're a hard-working side and we lacked that final pass, that little bit of quality, to get back in the game.”
