Rovers chalked up a hat-trick of wins, but had to come from behind, to beat Swindon Town on this day in 1994.

Kenny Dalglish's side had lost for just a fifth time in the Premier League that season, a 1-0 defeat at Arsenal, at the end of February, but had started March in fine form.

Mike Newell scored a late winner at Sheffield Wednesday, which followed a 2-0 win over Liverpool, which built expectation prior to the visit of Swindon Town.

But the Robins hadn't read the script, taking the lead four minutes in through Jan-Aage Fjortoft, lobbing the ball over Tim Flowers after his kick was headed back over the retreating Rovers defence.

Within two minutes though, Alan Shearer ended a six-game wait for a goal to level. Collecting the ball with his back to goal, Shearer found room for a shot which thundered beyond Fraser Digby and in to the corner.

That was league goal number 24 of the season, as Rovers responded quickly in their bid to maintain a title challenge.

They took the lead in the 26th minute, captain Tim Sherwood arriving at the perfect moment to sweep home a Henning Berg cross after Swindon failed to clear Shearer's initial delivery.

Rovers had to wait until deep in to the second half to make the game safe though, awarded a penalty with eight minutes to play after Stuart Ripley was tripped just inside the box, despite Swindon's protestations.

Shearer brought up his 25th league goal of the season, just squeezing his spot-kick beyond Digby and in to the corner.
