BILLY Kee has signed for non league side Coalville Town having left Accrington Stanley two weeks ago.

The 29-year-old had his contract cancelled by mutual consent after announcing he wanted to retire from full time professional football due to personal reasons having battled mental health issues for much of his career.

Kee scored 76 goals in 179 league appearances for Stanley including finishing as the League Two top scorer with 26 when the Reds won the league title in 2018.

He will combine playing part-time football while working in the building trade.

Kee's wife Leigh took to social media to explain his quick return to football.

"Let's set the story straight," she said. "My husband has retired from professional football through personal reasons. Most people that know him understand.

"Playing part-time, non league, working on a building site full time and wants to put his boots on for fun and pure love he has for the game."

Coalville play in Southern League Premier Division Central and are currently seventh in the table, a point outside the play-off places.

Chairman Glyn Rennocks said: "When someone of Billy’s calibre becomes available on our doorstep you have to do everything you can to get him on board. Since we met last week it's been a pleasure to deal with him and we are delighted he’s chosen us over a host of big names in non-league."

"Being a Leicester based lad our location suits him perfectly, he can now balance working full time whilst playing part time football. I would like to thank everyone behind the scenes who has helped get this deal over the line.’

Manager Adam Stevens added: "I am delighted to get Billy back on the football pitch again, my type of player whose experience, ability and know how will be invaluable to us in the run in.

To choose us is a massive coup for the club and local area. I’m sure Billy and family will fit in with our family club ethos and enjoy his football again."

Kee goes straight into the squad to face Needham Market at home tomorrow after already training with the squad on Thursday and Saturday.
