Defensive errors costing the Clarets

For the second time in two games the Clarets handed the momentum to the opposition on the stroke of half-time.

Last week, Jamie Vardy equalised for Leicester City after the striker managed to get the better of Ben Mee while on Saturday it was a poor pass from James Tarkowski who handed Christian Pulisic the chance to double Chelsea’s lead.

The Clarets had reacted well to going 1-0 against Frank Lampard’s men but conceding a second before the break knocked the wind out of the Burnley revival.

There were question marks over positioning on the third and fourth goals but certainly the first two could have been avoided.

It’s all ifs and buts but the Clarets' performance in the first half deserved more than being 2-0 down.

Sean Dyche is right to keep banging the drum about diving

I know a few people in the press room get a little bit tired of the Burnley boss bringing up the issue of diving most weeks but he’s absolutely correct to do so.

Diving to win your side a penalty is cheating, plain and simple. Callum Hudson-Odoi was able to trick referee Michael Oliver when he went down under pressure from Tarkowski and Matt Lowton but, thankfully, VAR over-ruled it and the Chelsea man was booked.

It’s a scourge which is ruining the game and Dyche is right when he says it is going to be a farce in the next five or 10 years unless the powers that be take proper action.

A booking doesn’t seem to be deterring those from doing it so maybe it is time to see some red cards dished out.

Jay Rodriguez proving a shrewd addition to the squad

He might not have realised it himself when talking to the press pack after the game but Jay Rodriguez now has three goals from three starts this season.

The Burnley-born striker didn’t have too many chances against Chelsea but produced a wonder strike late on to give the Clarets fans something to cheer about.

He works in different areas to the Clarets ‘first choice’ front two of Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood but that variety will pay dividends for Burnley over the course of the season.

He’s clearly enjoying being back at Turf Moor and has had to be patient for his chance from the start but is giving Dyche plenty to think about in terms of selection. Last season, he scored a perfect hat-trick in the 4-2 win over Bury in December at Boundary Park.
