Mistakes in the defeat at QPR, given how Rovers have performed defensively this season, were classed as ‘uncharacteristic’ to boss Tony Mowbray.

Rovers shipped four goals for the first time since March, with the loss of Greg Cunningham and Darragh Lenihan to injury not helping their cause, at Loftus Road.

Having kept four clean sheets in their opening seven Championship matches, Rovers are without one since the win over Millwall on September.

Mowbray revealed individuals had held their hands up to the mistakes that brought about the four goals that were typical of Rovers on the road last season when they conceded a division high 48.

They will have to do without on-loan Cunningham for the remainder of the season, and Lenihan for up to eight weeks, and the boss knows they must show more resilience at the back moving forward.

“I think it was very uncharacteristic I would suggest for this season,” Mowbray explained.

“I don’t think this season those types of goals have been conceded generally.

“Derrick went away on international duty on the back of that game so didn’t have any of the reviews the following day to show him and discuss it with him but he has held his hands up and said he needed to be better in certain situations.

“I think Darragh Lenihan could have done better in certain situations and the first goal, Amari’i Bell needed to do better.

“We talked about it. It was uncharacteristic of this season, but we had a few of them last year where the game ran away from us and the goals went in. It felt a little bit like that.

“We actually scored three goals on the day, Derrick Williams’ goal in my opinion was not offside, it was level at worst, but they flagged for offside. We scored two legitimate goals. But we still lost the game and it’s something that can’t happen.

“How much disruption was there with losing Cunningham? Maybe that disruption of what had been a pretty solid defence didn’t help.

“If you think back to the Forest game they had four shots in all of the 90 minutes and scored from a 25-yarder. Defensively, four clean sheets and the opportunities we’ve restricted teams to, defensively I think we have been a lot better this season in my opinion.

“Now we have to rebuild because there are two fairly long-term injuries to that back four.

“Let’s see if we can hit the ground running and start with a victory this Saturday if we can.”
