Rovers reporter Rich Sharpe hands out his player ratings after a 2-1 win at Reading.
Christian Walton 7
With a lack of saves to make, his best work came with handling from crosses and a late Liam Moore header. Nothing he could do with John Swift’s 20-yard strike.
Elliott Bennett 7
Involved in an excellent battle with Obita down the flank and blocked several attempted crosses. Linked up well going forward with Downing in the first half. Booked for a cynical challenge late on.
Darragh Lenihan 8
Was aggressive towards Lucas Joao every time the ball went up towards the former Rovers loanee and shackled his threat well. One excellent first half block from a Yiadom shot.
Derrick Williams 7
Puscas broke in behind off his shoulder on the odd occasion, but several good interceptions saw him continue his strong defensive form.
Greg Cunningham 7
Given a tough time by Yiadom in the second half, but pushed forward late on to good effect. Booked for kicking the ball away.
Lewis Travis 7
Was well placed to clear several crosses, but could have done better in the build-up to the Reading goal. Was still full of running late on as Rovers saw the game out.
Corry Evans 7
Handed his first league start and looked keen to take it with a front foot performance. Pressed the ball well, setting up Gallagher with an excellent pass, but his influence dipped as the game went on.
Bradley Dack 8
Came to life in the second half with a goal moments after the re-start. Hassled and harried well from the front.
Stewart Downing 8
His cross found Armstrong for the opener, but didn’t always take the best option with some excellent counter-attacking opportunities late in the first half, including a shot straight at the keeper. Quality in possession in the second half was impressive.
Sam Gallagher 8
His performance had everything but a goal, winning 11 headers, and having a hand in the second goal for Dack. Should have hit the target with his shot which flew just over in the first half.
Adam Armstrong 8
Gave Rovers a real outlet on the left side, ending his wait for a goal with a fine strike which nestled in the top corner. Linked up well with Gallagher in the lead-up to Dack’s goal.
Subs
Lewis Holtby (for Gallagher, 70) 7
Won four tackles, more than anyone on the pitch, despite his late introduction. Showed glimpses of his passing quality, often picking the right option, but missed a golden chance from Dack’s pass.
Bradley Johnson (for Evans, 73) 7
Used the ball well after his introduction and had two efforts saved by Cabral.
Danny Graham (for Gallagher, 77) 7
Almost scored with his first touch, heading over from a Downing corner, and his ability to play with his back to goal gave Rovers someone to play off.
Subs not used: Jayson Leutwiler, Ryan Nyambe, Amari’i Bell, John Buckley
