Free agent goalkeeper Ben Garratt is still training at Rovers but the possibility of a permanent contract appears unlikely at this stage.

The shot-stopper has been at Rovers for the last week working alongside coach Ben Benson. Garratt is without a club having turned down the offer of a new deal at Crewe before spending the summer training at Bury.

And after the Shakers’ EFL expulsion, Garratt was offered the chance to train with Rovers with third-choice ‘keeper Andrew Fisher having joined

Northampton Town on loan last month.

That leaves Rovers with just Christian Walton and Jayson Leutwiler as their senior goalkeeping options, but Mowbray doesn’t foresee that changing.

“It didn’t really come through me, I said okay to it because Fisher has gone out on loan and he had been at a club where it hadn’t worked out,” the boss told the Lancashire Telegraph of Garratt who played against Rovers for Bury in pre-season.

“There’s no cost for us. We’re giving him training time and he’s helping us with goalkeeping numbers because you need goalkeepers in training.

“Whether it be for small-sided games, shooting practice, you need goalkeepers on your training ground.

“The opportunity came along and I said ‘no problem’.

“He wasn’t someone I’d identified, but he’s a good lad around the building, he’s got on well with everyone and Ben (Benson) thinks he’s okay.

“He’s not at the forefront of my mind that we’re going to offer him a big contract in the next week or two, at this moment he’s just training and staying fit and keeping his ear to the ground.

“Let’s wait and see.”

Garratt has spent the entirety of his senior career so far with Crewe and was highly rated when coming through the ranks at Gresty Road.

Twice a player of the season, the 25-year-old chalked up 247 appearances for the Alex and was offered a contract by the League Two club before he opted to end his long association with the club and go in search of pastures new.

Although the transfer window has now closed, Garratt, as a free agent, is still able to sign for EFL sides.

Rovers brought in Joe Hilton on a two-year deal from Everton and the 21-year-old has started all four Under-23s matches so far.

Walton arrived on a season-long loan deal from Brighton, after the departure of David Raya to Brentford in June.

Leutwiler signed a new one-year deal to take his stay at Ewood Park in to a third season, with Fisher joining Northampton last month where he has made one Leasing.com Trophy appearance so far.
