Rovers’ lack of goals isn’t of concern to captain Elliott Bennett who has backed the forwards to start firing soon.

While Rovers own the second defensive record in the Championship, only Brentford have scored fewer than Rovers’ three from five matches.

They are yet to score from open play and were left frustrated in front of goal in a 0-0 draw with Cardiff City at Ewood.

Derrick Williams went closest to a winner when hitting the inside of the post in the final five minutes, but Bennett is confident the fine margins will start turning in their favour.

“I don’t think there’s a lot wrong,” said the 30-year-old.

“If we weren’t creating anything then I’d be standing here really disappointed but we’re creating chances in and around the box and it’s just the final bit that’s not quite landing for us.

“We’ll keep working on those things on the training ground and we have to keep getting in there and as long as at the back we’re keeping the ball out of the net then we have lads at the top end of the pitch that will score plenty of goals for us.”

Neither side created a glut of chances in an even game in which defences were definitely on top.

Cardiff skipper Sean Morrison denied Danny Graham with a fine challenge, with the striker also seeing a first half shot deflected over.

And captain Bennett added: “It could have gone either way.

“I thought first half we created probably the better chances, millimetres away from getting on the end of some things.

“Morrison made some good blocks, Derrick hit the post, and I felt we dealt with their directness well.

“It’s another clean sheets which is something to be happy about and I’m sure the fine margins in the opposition box which aren’t quite going for us at the moment will turn around and we’ll start scoring more goals.”

Rovers’ defensive record was a source of criticism last season, shipping 69 in their 46 Championship matches.

But they registered a third consecutive clean sheet against the Bluebirds, something Bennett sees a real positive.

“Last season we got questioned a lot and rightly so, we conceded too many goals as a team,” he said. “We’ve started this season, got three clean sheets in a row, and that’s a real positive and something we can certainly build on.”

Goalkeeper Christian Walton saved a penalty in the win at Hull City and also came up with a smart stop to deny Cardiff attacker Lee Tomlin.

“He’s been brilliant. The penalty save the other night really set us up for the win at Hull," Bennett said. “Against a really physical Cardiff side, they’re like giants out there, he came out and used all of his big frame and collected quite a few high balls which was really helpful for us.”
