Rovers have tracked a new goalkeeper since selling David Raya to Brentford earlier this month.

That saw their goalkeeper search increase from one, to two, with boss Tony Mowbray already having identified bringing in an experienced option as key this summer.

Brighton ‘keeper Christian Walton, at 23, will be the first through the door when agreeing a season-long loan deal which should be concluded today.

The time it has taken for 23-year-old Raya to be replaced has raised eyebrows with some supporters, but Rovers’ search has been fluid, with a number of options explored, several of which have since fallen away for a variety of reasons.

“We’re working hard behind the scenes,” Mowbray told the Lancashire Telegraph.

“A few targets have drifted away for a number of reasons but we’re conscious we have to try and get them in and give them a chance to bed in with the team.

“That’s what we’re trying to do and hopefully we’ll have some announcements to make soon.”

Mowbray wouldn’t be drawn on the specifics of the likely incomings at Ewood Park, unsurprising given the number of Championship clubs in the market for goalkeepers.

Two new arrivals will also throw in to doubt the future of Jayson Leutwiler who played the full 90 minutes of the 1-1 draw at Rangers, as well as the final four games of last seasons.

“I don’t really want to talk until these deals are done and then I’m happy to discuss the reasons," he added.

“We know where we need to strengthen. We're working really hard. It's not as if we've not been doing anything.

“Good players, generally more than one team wants them and sometimes they drift away. Players make decisions and then you have to move on to the next one which is what we've done but that doesn't mean one player is first choice and the other is second choice.

“Sometimes, until you make that phone call, you don’t know a player is on three times more than what you can afford.

“You don’t pursue that and move on to the next target and hopefully by the start of the season we’ll have a squad that can be competitive in the division.”
