BURNLEY completed their pre-season training camp in Portugal with a behind-closed-doors friendly win over Fulham.

Chris Wood handed the Clarets a 1-0 victory by scoring from the penalty spot 20 minutes from time.

The Clarets fielded almost two completely different XIs in each half with new recruits Jay Rodriguez and Erik Pieters both getting 45 minutes.

It brought to an end a week in the Algarve heat for Sean Dyche’s men with the training run-out seeing them edge a tight game against Scott Parker’s side, relegated from the Premier League last season and now preparing for life in the Championship.

Wood picked up from where he left off last season for the Clarets, the New Zealand international scoring 13 times in all competitions as established himself as one of the first choices through the middle with Ashley Barnes.

Rodriguez will provide fierce competition for the pair and having returned to Turf Moor from West Bromwich Albion, he nearly made the perfect start but was flagged offside when heading home a Robbie Brady free-kick early on.

Teenager Josh Benson was the only player to stay on for the second half, being replaced by Matej Vydra with 25 minutes to play.

Ben Gibson was the man fouled in the box allowing Wood to settle things from 12 yards.

The Clarets’ first public pre-season friendlies see Dyche split his squad for games at Crewe and Port Vale, both matches kicking off at 3pm on Saturday, as the build-up continues to a fourth straight Premier League season.

First half: Pope, Bardsley, Mee, Long, Pieters, Gudmundsson, Westwood, Benson, Hendrick, Rodriguez.

Second half: Hart, Lowton, Tarkowski, Gibson, Dunne, Lennon, Cork, McNeil, Benson (Vydra 65), Barnes, Wood.
