BURNLEY legend Martin Dobson has written himself into the history books ... quite literally.

The former captain, who spent 12 years at Turf Moor after signing in 1967, is believed to be the first ex-England player to have a novel published.

Having played more than 600 league and cup games in a 20-year career, it's perhaps not surprising that Dobson's book, Ultimate Goals!', is based around football - telling the story of two youngsters eager to make their way in the game.

The duo - Jake and Ricky - come from very different backgrounds, but share the same aim of becoming professional footballers.

Jake is from a stable background, was scouted when he was at secondary school and joined the under-13 squad at Premier League Burding Town.

Ricky is from a single parent family, was battered by his mother's partner and turned to drugs. But a concerned schoolmaster rescued him and after visiting a US soccer school, Ricky joined Mexter in the Championship.

Jake, meanwhile, overcomes a serious injury and was made first team captain while still a teenager. For a while, the fame might have gone to his head but he recaptured his grip on reality and the book ends when both boys make it to the FA Cup final.

The recent release of Ultimate Goals! marks the end of three years' hard work for former England and Everton midfielder Dobson.

"Writing a book is something I've always wanted to do and I'm pleased with it," the 59-year-old said.

"People asked me if I would write under a pseudonym but I said no. I've been up for criticism throughout my football career, and if people don't like my book then they know it's my work and I accept that.

"In my footballing career, I've been very lucky to have had two fantastic clubs in Burnley and Everton, and then I went to Bury as a player-manager.

"I've coached as well, been an academy director at Bolton Wanderers and now I'm involved in scouting.

"That covers a lot of aspects of football itself, as well as the atmosphere in the dressing room.

"People will look at the book and say that's that' but the two central character aren't based on one particular player that I know."

Ultimate Goals! is aimed at 12-year-olds upwards, who want to find out about the life of a professional footballer.

It has been published by SportsBooks and is on sale now, priced £6.99.
