Ex-Accrington Stanley man Dan Barlaser joins Rotherham United

The Newcastle United midfielder will join up with the Millers as they embark on their League One after being relegated from the Championship last season.

Barlaser will come up against his old side when Stanley travel to Yorkshire on Saturday, November 16.

The 22-year-old will then return to the Wham Stadium on Saturday, February 22 in the reverse fixture between the two sides.

The midfielder admits he spoke to former Stanley man Michael Ihiekwe: "Talking to him convinced me to come because he was telling me how good it is here and how good the lads and staff are."

Talking on how the move came about, Barlaser said: "There was interest from Championship and other League One clubs, me and my agent came here about two weeks ago to meet them.

"I thought the way they went about to try and get me was brilliant.

"The interest itself was massive, they really tried to get me in. The facilities and the way the gaffer wants to play was a factor in me coming here.

"The key thing for me was that they proved last season in the Championship that they give youngsters a chance and that's massive for me with me being a young player myself.

"I'm just excited to be getting going with the lads and for the season."

Barlaser made 39 appearances for John Coleman’s side in League One last season - scoring once and assisting once.

The Gateshead-born man made 45 appearances in total - scoring six in all competitions.

He became a key part of the midfield along with Sam Finley.

The midfielder has become manager Paul Warne’s fifth signing of this summer window.

Barlaser’s situation has been closely monitored by Rob Scott and the first team staff over the close season and the AESSEAL New York Stadium-club have finally been able to land their man, with the news coinciding with the midfielder signing a contract extension with the Magpies.

He has also been on loan at Crewe Alexandra and has played for Turkey and England at international youth level.
