Ben Brereton says a first Rovers goal is the confidence booster he needed after opening the scoring in the 2-0 win over Bolton.

Brereton was handed just his fifth Championship against Wanderers and rewarded the faith of manager Tony Mowbray with his first goal since a big-money move from Nottingham Forest.

Adam Armstrong scored five minutes in to the second half as Rovers won for the fourth consecutive game to move within a point of the top half.

Brereton finished off an excellent team move in the 30th minute, sweeping home a Bradley Dack pass with a confident first time finish in to the bottom corner.

And the 20-year-old told the Lancashire Telegraph: “I have been working hard in training but knew I needed to take that out on the pitch and show people what I can do. I felt I did well.

“I needed that for myself and my confidence. It was brilliant. It was great to get my first goal and a great team performance.

“It was on my weak foot but it’s something I’ve been working on in training and it’s becoming habit.

“I think I should have had two or three but let’s not be greedy!

“The creativity we have, the likes of Dacky, Arma and Joe Rothwell they’re great to have in any team.”

Rovers won just one of their 11 league matches from the end of January before stringing together four consecutive victories which has moved them to 59 points with two games remaining.

Brereton says the players were always confident of turning around their fortunes following the poor run and hopes they can go in to the summer in confident mood.

He added: “We went through a bumpy run halfway through but we’re back on track and all the lads have stuck together.

“Coming up from League One and pushing for that top 10 would be key for us.”

“To climb up the table you have to put those wins together. The season is up and down for most teams but finding that consistency and the wins will move you up.

“I have only been here this season but the lads are quality, the coaching staff are as well, we train hard.

“Coming up from League One and pushing for that top 10 would be key for us.

“We have stuck together as a team and have these last four games have shown what a good team we can be.

“We will look to take that in to the end of the season, have a good rest and comeback for pre-season.”

Brereton was given a run in a central striking role, with Danny Graham rested against Wanderers.

He did well with his back to goal, and bringing other people in to play, in an all-round good performance.

And Brereton says working with 33-year-old Graham has been key to his development.

“DG has done brilliantly and has been a great role model to look up to,” he said.

“He’s been good for me to watch and I’ve tried to take that in to the game.

“You have to lead the line and bring people in to play, stay in the space.

“I was definitely happy with a start.”
